Been on this problem for a good 5 hrs… This page should be a google exclusive, took me awhile to find it. Shouldn’t have seen the smile on my face when I heard sounds on Win98 on vmware.
Thanks for taking the time to post this.

Gerry

Hi there,
at the begiining of the SB driver installation I get the error message “…no Soundblaster audio device found…” and it stops. The device manager shows the SB16 or compatible device. Is there an idea how to spve that issue?
Hi Jens,
Is this the error message which occurs?
“Setup could not detect any Sound Blaster Audio on your system”
Depending on your installation and preference settings. Go to default folder for this Windows 98 virtual machine is C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\My Virtual Machines\Windows 98 .
Open up Windows 98.vmx file with notepad. See if you have sound.virtualDev = “sb16”. If you see this line, try removing it to see if it helps. My .vmx file only contains the following lines for sound.
sound.present = “TRUE”
sound.fileName = “-1”
sound.autodetect = “TRUE”
Hope it helps.

I have a Windows 98 under VMware and when I try to install SBPCI_WebDrvsV5_12_01.exe it tell me the OS is incompatible and thjat I have to upgrade toward Windows 98 Second Edition.
So, is there a way to have audio under Windows 98 (first edition) ?
Well, I’ve finally used another way, a lot easier :
1) just download this tiny file (32KB) : ftp://vieuxpc.homeftp.net/BI440ZX_ES1373_Creative_Audio.zip
2) extract its content in a directory
3) Select this directory when Windows ask for a location for audio driver
Solved !
